Inductive Study Organizer
Recently I have felt a push to give more variety on my blog. Of course, me being me, I was super hesitant about it and if it would even work. However, I am a big believer in "2 or three witnesses" for the Lord revealing things to us. That being said, He used multiple parts of my life and brought about new finds that backed up the feeling I had to create more for my blog.
Being an Elementary Education major, I am surrounded by strategies and theories for ways of teaching. What is super neat about this is that these topics I am learning can also be applied to ministry. We all have ways of learning and tools that help us to grasp concepts easily, and all of this can be used across various areas in life.
So, this post will solely cover a recent graphic organizer I created for an already established way to study the Bible. The study is called The Inductive Method of Bible Study. Again, I did not create this method. I only created the organizer that is attached to this post. By the way, I finally know how to make a Word document a PDF, then a PDF to JPEG because of making this organizer, and I feel like I have discovered a whole new way to live. It's the little things in life, guys. Although, I probably found the most difficult way to do all of that. Oh well.
Okay, so if you have never heard of The Inductive Method, you are probably wondering what all it includes. What I love about this method is that it slows me down to not skip ahead to applying the scripture to myself (I am a 2 on the Enneagram, so emotions and relating something to my own life is what I love).
Instead, first, I observe. I think about what is going on, who is involved, where it happened, and when it occurred. To understand scripture, it is vital to understand the context. The Bible was written in specific time periods; even some of the book of the Bible were written to specific groups of people. Knowing all of this, the method requires me to consider all of the background information about a specific passage.
Next, I interpret. It is important to keep in mind what the author's main message was in writing this scripture. This step depends on what you observed because the meaning of the text relates to the context of it. I tend to ask myself, "What is the scripture teaching?"
Last, I apply. First, keep in mind that we do not apply scripture by changing what it means to what we want it to say for our life. Rather, we must know what the interpretation is. The best way to explain this is to use an example. In 1 Corinthians 13 when it describes what love is, the interpretation is that love is patient, kind, selfless, and so on. However, I could apply this to my life through a friendship. Someone else might apply this to how they love their children. Another person may dwell on these verses and apply them to how they love their husband. All three of us interpret what love is based on how Paul described it in the context of the passage, but we can apply this type of love in different aspects of our lives.
Now that you know the steps of this method, feel free to download the graphic organizer for it. The circle is for O - Observe, the rectangle is for I - Interpret, and the triangle is for A- Apply. The download is completely free, so print off as many
as you would like!
